World’s smallest highway
The last issue of the Leys Independent reported that, finally, an alleyway in Windale Avenue used by drug dealers, burglars and vandals was to be blocked up 2½ years after residents first petitioned for it. Unbelievably, the residents have now been told by Oxfordshire County Council that plans to install security gates across the alleyway cannot go ahead because it’s a public highway.
As usual, Labour county councillor Barbara Gatehouse chose to side with the council bureaucracy rather than the residents, telling the Oxford Mail, ‘You may think it’s an alleyway, but it’s a highway, and if the council went ahead (with the security gates) it would be a problem’—a problem for who Barbara?
