War on drugs—Blackbird Leys forced to go it alone

The IWCA is hosting a public meeting to discuss how to tackle heroin and crack-cocaine dealing on the estate.

The aim of the meeting is to bring residents together in order to look for solutions from within the community.

As the IWCA has previously made clear, the mainstream political parties, housing authorities, police and local media are all determined to ignore this problem.

City councillor Stuart Craft summed the situation up: ‘If those of us who live on Blackbird Leys want to see the situation improve then it is obvious we will have to do something about it ourselves.’

‘This is an attempt to go beyond the usual rhetoric of the “war on drugs” or liberalisation of drugs policy. Many people here have to put up with drug dealing and its attendant problems on a daily basis. Others have seen friends and family members fall prey to heroin or crack addiction. We have no choice but to look for practical solutions.’

The meeting starts at 3pm and takes place at the Barn, Nightingale Avenue on Saturday 29 June.
