Councillor presses for all-weather football pitch
Northfield Brook representative, Jane Lacey has called on Oxford City Council to release money promised for a new artificial football pitch and improvements in Spindleberry Park five years ago. £160,000 was set aside in 2001 after the BMX track in the park was destroyed to make way for the Kassam Stadium.
Cllr Lacey said, ‘Young people in the area have made it clear they want a pitch while IWCA door-to-door surveys of the estate have repeatedly shown that residents would like to see more facilities for young people, not least as a way of keeping them occupied and preventing them from getting involved in crime and antisocial behaviour.
‘It’s terrible that all this money has been sitting around for five years with nothing being done.’
Teenagers living near Spindleberry Park have been surveyed twice by the council. On both occasions they asked for the money to be spent on an all-weather pitch.
As the Leys Independent goes to press, Northfield Brook councillors Jane Lacey and Stuart Craft will be meeting with council officers to agree a way forward for the artificial ground.
