Joint opposition to parking charges

Both the IWCA and Labour have opposed the Tory-run county council’s plans to charge Blackbird Leys residents for parking.

IWCA councillor Jane Lacey submitted a motion at the last Oxford City Council meeting stating: ‘This council agrees that this proposed stealth tax on the people of Blackbird Leys is both unfair and unjustifiable and we agree to demonstrate our opposition to the county council directly.’

Councillors of all parties were overwhelmingly in favour of this position.

Mrs Lacey helped to kick-start opposition to the parking charges by collecting 500 signatures with neighbours Kevin and Kim Annelly in support of the ‘Say NO to parking charges!’ campaign.

At the end of last month it was reported that 5,000 Oxford residents replied to the county council’s questionnaire on parking permits out of the 26,000 who received one-an unprecedented response to a public consultation of this kind.

The results of the survey will be released in September.
