Improving the estate: campaign for play area pays off
Residents of the Field Avenue maisonettes can now enjoy their new play area, which replaces a derelict drying area in front of their homes.
Residents faced an uphill battle with the council for two years during the IWCA-backed campaign for better facilities.
The maisonettes had been neglected for years and suffered from a catalogue of problems.
IWCA councillor Stuart Craft said, ‘The new play area shows that common areas around the estate don’t have to be derelict.
We would encourage residents all over the Leys to follow this example and press for a decent living environment.
The council has been very reluctant to spend any money on this kind of project, as is clear from the time taken, but the residents of the maisonettes have shown that with determination real gains can be made.
